Understanding, Measuring, and Improving
This Friday is World Diabetes Day! That’s why, throughout this week on our blog and Instagram, we’re taking you along on our mission to better understand and fight diabetes. Worldwide, more than 500 million people are affected by this disease, including over 1.2 million in the Netherlands. Yet, there’s still a lot of confusion about what diabetes actually is and what you can do about it.
What happens to your body when you have diabetes?
Diabetes means that the body struggles to keep blood glucose levels in balance. Glucose is an important source of energy; it comes from the carbohydrates you eat, such as bread, fruit, and pasta. Want to learn more about glucose? Check out our earlier blog post here.
After a meal, the amount of glucose in your blood rises. Normally, your body responds by producing insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas. This insulin helps glucose move from the blood into your cells, thereby lowering your blood sugar levels again.
In people with diabetes, this process doesn’t work properly:
- Type 1 diabetes: The body no longer produces insulin. This form often develops at a young age but can also appear later in life.
- Type 2 diabetes: The body still produces insulin but doesn’t respond to it effectively. This condition is referred to as insulin resistance. Type 2 diabetes usually develops gradually, often later in life. But good news: this type can often be treated with changes in lifestyle!
In both cases, the result of the disease is the same: blood sugar levels remain too high, which can, over time, cause damage to blood vessels, nerves, and organs.
At Clear.bio, we help people with type 2 diabetes understand how their body responds to food, so they can stabilize their blood sugar levels.
Why is it important to stabilize blood glucose levels?
Many people don’t notice much at first when their blood sugar levels are too high. However, it can have a big impact on your energy, focus, and even your mood. By understanding how your body reacts to food, stress, and physical activity, you can gain much more control over your overall health.
World Diabetes Day: knowledge is power!
World Diabetes Day is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a moment to reflect on how we can live healthier lives together. At Clear.bio, we believe that insight is the first step toward change. By understanding what happens in your body, you can start making choices today that will make a difference tomorrow.
